Our research focus

Investigating real-life effects:
intention, implementation and impact

We evaluate the real-life implementation and impact of health interventions with a focus on the gap between policies and their implementation

With the HDSS platform as the backbone, we can:

Reality, as seen by the providers of health services in distant villages and by mothers seeking health services for their children, may look very different from how health policy implementation is described on paper. However, such gaps between intended and implemented health policies are frequently not visible because the data to assess the discrepancy is not being collected.

In Guinea-Bissau we ensure that the data necessary to monitor uptake and effect of health interventions are available. Based on the Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) of the Bandim Health Project in Guinea-Bissau, we ensure the collection of data that allows monitoring changes in maternal and child health in a population of more than 240,000 individuals.

Examine how health programmes are implemented in real life;

Assess how programme implementation and programme effects differ depending on the indicators chosen for evaluation;

Identify how programmes could be improved and test potential solutions in randomised trials.
